Cooking Fail

Hi there,

I did this quick sketch during a break from work at my local cafe.  It was a gorgeous sunny day and I have been cooped up in the house for far too long.  I finished the sketch before I finished a nice glass of chai latte.  I entered this to Art Jumble Blog theme of the week which is "Fail".  I have been watching a lot of Master Chef and I thought it would be a bit of fun to draw this.  This was hand drawn and hand inked then coloured in photoshop.

It's important to be able to do your own stuff while doing work I feel.  I get all depressed and angsty and I find that my jobs do suffer because of it.  I had a tough week all of last week and earlier this week.  I got sick and my confidence took a beating at work and I am very hard on myself too which doesn't help and I spent most of last week just working and nothing else and it really messes with my head space.  I started feeling like I shouldn't even be doing this, I should be much better than what I am and what I have I done in my life.  Then I went off and drew something for me and you just realize that as long as I keep doing this I will get better.  Practice makes perfect and there really is no point comparing myself to someone else...best to just knuckle down and find where the mistakes are and try harder.  Ultimately....I do what I do because I love it.  I love creating and improving, the competitiveness and I love the people I work with.  So, hoping that I can do better tomorrow!

  1. Hey Marta, I love this drawing! Are you doing any other work beside GS? cos I felt similar, I felt my animation was not the best and why was I doing it? I think a lot has to do with the fact that animation nowadays is 80% smoothing pixels, pushing and skewing shapes, pulling groups around, motion button, graphs, and then 20% working out the timing. Really makes it hard for us drawers to just enjoy and get on with enjoying creating the illusion of life.

  2. Hey Rosey, thanks a lot! I am working on a couple of freelance game animation gigs as well at the moment. Nothing too strenuous to be honest. I know what you mean with computer animation, though at the same time I wonder if I can keep to model if I did it all traditionally and I do like that UNDO button.... I saw your GS animations though and it's looking pretty sweet :)

  3. Hey, I'd still eat that. :) Great drawing! Top Chef, Master Chef, I love those cooking shows.

You know what I read recently? I read that there seems to be some sort of relationship between intelligence and feeling like a fraud. Anecdotally, at least, the more intelligent people often feel like their work is not good enough. I think that sort of feeling is a good thing, actually. It pushes us to strive for more. I, personally, am very impressed with your work!

  4. Hi Marta, thanks for your comments on my drawing a day blog. Please keep going and know creative friends are here to support you! Your work is awesome!! Do you know the book; 'The Artists Way'? That book speaks to my artists soul and got me drawing again after 17 years of not drawing after art school. Thanks for the inspiration. :)
